Kodak Pro Image 100 35mm Film

Kodak Pro Image 100 is one of those films that quietly delivers more than its price suggests. ISO 100, fine grain, high sharpness, wide exposure latitude, and a warm, vibrant colour palette that sits in an interesting position in the Kodak lineup — more saturated and punchy than the neutral elegance of Portra 160, less intense than Ektar 100, with a lively warmth that photographs people and outdoor scenes particularly well.

Pro Image 100 was originally formulated for professional photographers working in tropical and high-humidity markets across Latin America and Asia — conditions that demand reliable, consistent results across a wide range of shooting situations. That professional brief shaped an emulsion that handles skin tones with care, holds shadow and highlight detail generously, and delivers strong colour that reproduces well across different lighting conditions. It's since become more widely available globally, and photographers outside those original markets have discovered that its combination of quality and value is genuinely hard to match.

Camera pairings: Canon AE-1, Nikon FM2, Olympus OM-1, Pentax K1000, Canon Sure Shot, Olympus Stylus Epic, Contax T2, Nikon L35AF — Pro Image 100 works well in any 35mm camera and particularly shines with the point-and-shoots that photographers carry to events and social occasions.

Why photographers love Kodak Pro Image 100

The colour is the first thing you notice — warm, rich, and vivid without tipping into oversaturation. Pro Image 100 has a characteristic look that sits closer to the punchy end of the Kodak palette than the neutral professional films, and it suits subjects that benefit from that: outdoor portraits with warm natural light, weddings and events, travel and street photography in bright conditions, social occasions where you want colour that pops.

Skin tones are handled with a flattering warmth. Unlike Ektar 100 — which can shift skin tones in ways that require careful management — Pro Image 100 renders faces with a natural, pleasing colour that works straight from the scanner. Combined with the wide exposure latitude and fine grain, it's a film that makes shooting feel easy: you get good results across a range of conditions without fighting the emulsion.

The ISO 100 speed means it belongs to good light — bright outdoor shooting, shaded outdoor environments, window-lit interiors. In those conditions the fine grain and high sharpness give the images a clarity and presence that reward the patience of working slowly in good light. For Australian conditions, where bright sun is abundant and most outdoor shooting happens in beautiful natural light, Pro Image 100 is a natural fit.

A bit of film history

Kodak Pro Image 100 was developed for professional photographers working in demanding tropical conditions — high heat, high humidity — across Latin America, Asia, and other developing markets where reliable, vibrant colour negative film was in demand. The formulation prioritised consistent performance, accurate colour, and strong results under conditions that could challenge less robust emulsions. As the global film market has evolved, Pro Image 100 has become available to photographers worldwide, and its combination of professional-grade quality at a more accessible price point has found it a growing following in analogue communities across Australia and beyond.

Processing

Kodak Pro Image 100 requires standard C-41 colour negative processing. We process C-41 in-house at Ikigai Film Lab in Melbourne, with scanning available on our Fujifilm Frontier and Noritsu HS-1800 scanners. Pro Image 100's fine grain and warm colour palette scan cleanly — the vibrant colour renders well on both scanners, and the wide latitude means there's good detail to work with across the tonal range.

Common questions

How does Pro Image 100 compare to Kodak Gold 200?

Pro Image 100 is sharper, finer-grained, and has a slightly more refined colour palette than Gold 200 — it's a professional-grade emulsion with a more controlled look. Both are warm and vibrant, but Pro Image 100 has more precision. Gold 200's extra stop of speed gives it more flexibility in varied lighting. If you're shooting in good light and want the best quality, choose Pro Image 100. For everyday shooting across different conditions, Gold 200 is the more versatile option.

How does Pro Image 100 compare to Kodak Portra 160?

Portra 160 is more neutral, more refined, and technically superior in terms of grain and sharpness — it's the flagship professional portrait film. Pro Image 100 is warmer, more vibrant, and more affordable. If you're shooting professional portrait or wedding work and want the absolute best, Portra 160 is the standard. If you want strong, warm colour at a friendlier price point for portrait, event, and travel shooting, Pro Image 100 is a genuine alternative.

How does Pro Image 100 compare to Kodak Ektar 100?

Both are ISO 100 C-41 films with fine grain and high sharpness, but they have distinct personalities. Ektar 100 is ultra-vivid and hyper-saturated — exceptional for landscape, architecture, and travel without people, but it can shift skin tones. Pro Image 100 is warm and vibrant but considerably more flattering to skin, making it the better choice when people are in the frame. For pure colour intensity without people, Ektar. For people with vibrant colour, Pro Image 100.

Is Pro Image 100 good for portraits?

Yes — the warm, flattering skin tone rendering makes it a natural portrait film. It's less neutral than Portra 160 but considerably more forgiving than Ektar 100 when it comes to faces. If you want portraits with a warm, lively colour signature rather than a clinical neutral look, Pro Image 100 delivers that well.

Can I push Pro Image 100?

Pushing is possible but Pro Image 100 is best used at or near box speed in the good light it was designed for. If you need ISO 200 or 400, it's better to reach for Gold 200 or Ultramax 400 rather than pushing Pro Image 100 — you'll get better results from a film designed for those speeds.
