Kodak Vision3 50D Super 8 Colour Negative Film (ECN-2)
Kodak Vision3 50D is the slowest and finest-grained film in the Super 8 Vision3 lineup. It's a daylight-balanced motion picture negative processed in ECN-2 chemistry, built for situations where you have plenty of light and want the absolute cleanest, most detailed image possible.
Like the 500T cartridge, this Super 8 version has no remjet — it uses an Anti-Halation Undercoat (AHU) that washes off cleanly during ECN-2 processing, making it straightforward to develop without any special pre-bath or remjet removal step.
Price is per 50ft cartridge.
Why filmmakers choose Vision3 50D
50D is the choice when image quality is everything. At EI 50 in daylight, the grain is virtually invisible — Kodak describes it as the finest grain of any motion picture colour negative film in the world, and shooting it confirms that. The level of detail and colour fidelity it produces in good light is exceptional.
The expanded highlight latitude is a major practical advantage for outdoor shooting. Bright skies, harsh midday sun, and high-contrast exterior scenes that would clip on a faster stock are handled with remarkable control. You can expose for shadows and let the highlights take care of themselves, or meter carefully and pull extraordinary dynamic range out of a single frame.
It's the natural choice for sunny exterior shoots, documentary work in good light, travel cinematography, and any project where you want the image to look as pristine and detailed as Super 8 is capable of delivering.
A bit of film history
Kodak's Vision3 line is the current generation of professional motion picture film, used in Hollywood productions, independent cinema, and music videos worldwide. The 50D emulsion (7203) is derived from the same technology base as the 35mm and 16mm versions of the same stock. In Super 8, it gives independent filmmakers access to a genuine professional cinema emulsion in an affordable, accessible format.
Processing
Vision3 50D requires ECN-2 processing. The Super 8 cartridge version has no remjet — it uses an Anti-Halation Undercoat (AHU) that washes off cleanly during development, making it straightforward to process. We refer all Super 8 processing to the team at Nanolab in Australia, who handle ECN-2 development and scanning.
Common questions
Does this film have remjet?
No. The Super 8 cartridge version of Vision3 50D has no remjet. It uses an Anti-Halation Undercoat (AHU) instead, which washes off cleanly in ECN-2 processing without any special pre-bath or remjet removal step.
What is ECN-2 and where can I get it processed in Australia?
ECN-2 is the motion picture film development process used for Kodak Vision stocks. We refer all Super 8 ECN-2 processing to Nanolab in Australia — they handle development and scanning for Super 8 cartridges.
When should I choose 50D over 200T or 500T?
50D is the right choice when you're shooting in bright daylight and image quality is the priority. If you're shooting indoors, in low light, or in mixed conditions, you'll want the 200T or 500T instead. As a rough guide: 50D for sunny exteriors, 200T for overcast or interior work with good lighting, 500T for low light and night shooting.
Can I shoot 50D indoors?
Technically yes, but at EI 50 you'll need a lot of light. In a well-lit studio or under strong artificial lighting it's workable, but for most indoor situations the 200T or 500T will be more practical. 50D is really designed to shine in good daylight.
How long is 50ft of Super 8 film?
At the standard Super 8 shooting speed of 18fps, 50ft gives you approximately 3.5 minutes of footage. At 24fps you get around 2.5 minutes.
